Your fucking background loops suck.

Wariatadi responds:

thanks i'm not blind, that's becaouse i tried to add something more not only loop.

Preloader. Learn what it is. That's all I need to say.

WordWizard64 responds:

Had to educate myself on that. Good to know.

Okay seriously? You're inserting animation into Movie Clip Symbols and then bringing them back to the main timeline? Why the fuck wouldn't you just leave the frames on the Main Timeline? At least then you can properly synchronize the audio together with the animation instead of just an endless, moronic loop that I cant stop, especially since it never goes back to the supposed preloader screen but it's programmed to just stop at the last frame where he flaps his jaw endlessly yet he never says anything. Ass.

Why are you still using the Brush Tool? It looks like shit and I can see where you didn't erase lines that cross into each other. Flash doesn't acknowledge that shit as an actual outline, it acknowledges it as a color thus making excessive outlines almost impossible to fully delete without outright selecting all of it and deleting it at once considering how since it was done with the Brush tool and it's considered a color that means that all of your outlines are considered a single entity meaning that you cannot delete one without deleting all of it without the Eraser tool. By the way, the Eraser tool is utter shit too, why? Mainly because when you use it, it tends to leave shit behind all the fucking time, including stumps. The only viable way to erase that Brush tool shit is to use actual outlines, while zoomed in at 2000% mind you, to drive a wedge between the outlines you want to keep and the ones you one to delete so you don't delete all of it.

Question: is it better to use a tool that allows you to delete the lines it creates individually by merely clicking them and hitting delete such as the Pencil tool or the Line tool or is it better to use an outlining tool that you can't erase without sloppy ass results or taking on painful measures such as the Brush tool? Obviously the answer is the big fucking self imposed handicap because stylization is more valuable than quality right? I just love the concept of struggling to edit a single frame because the tools I use are fucking shit. *Middle Finger*

You're still not using an actual preloader and while I appreciate that you have at least a play button to get rid of that autoplay shit but I still can't monitor when the movie is actually ready to play and the fact that it doesn't preload means that playing to soon can cause loading errors to crop up like aspects of the movie going missing and the content just stopping in the middle because that's where it stopped loading when you started. Again, I don't know why that until you actually learn how to design your own preloader that you just don't use the Newgrounds preloaders, they have them for FREE under Community; Downloads; Flash Loaders. I even gave you one over a fucking PM when I salvaged that other Flash you submitted. Seriously, this isn't fucking rocket science.

HereWiiGoAgain responds:

Wow dude, thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this out! It really means a lot to me. I really do like this in depth critique and will take everything to heart man! WOW!

Worse artwork than the original, there's no pause, play, rewind or fast forward programming and the animation is worse because the lip syncing is comprised of two frames copied over and over and the frames themselves were comprised of an oval shape and a horizontal line. Not only that but what little animation there actually was, the lip syncing, was off kilter with the audio; the animation started before the audio did and you didn't bother to span either the oval shape frame nor the horizontal line frame longer to actually make it look like the muppet-esque mouth flaps correlated with the dialog. There are even parts where characters don't even physically speak yet they make noise out of their nonexistent mouths; you were either so lazy or shitty at Flash that you couldn't be bothered to copy those two frames for an extra 30 frames, a task that would have only taken two minutes at most. Furthermore, characters don't even actually move, they shift into frame via motion tweening.

This is your payback? Was this supposed to prove that you're better at what you do than me? All it proves is that I did more work on the original copies than you ever did, something of which you asked me to do, because despite all of what I taught you, these somehow turned out to be worse than the shit you dropped. It's not often that you get to see people regress in skill, a rare sight indeed.

I'll be honest, I have mixed feelings regarding the matter of Jonothan Ian Mathers and his work. For one thing I share the sentiment that Mathers has more than abused the dead gimmick that made him famous to begin with, the Foamy Rants. In all honesty, his fame being derived from yelling about vapid shit was probably the worst thing that happened to him because the show became less and less about satire and actual comedy but rather more about whatever the hot button topic was at the time. In case you can't tell, I'm never the last person to critique Mathers.

However still, you've fully admitted to only watching a fraction of his work, not even knowing he existed prior to his reemergence in the portal and you think it's fair to critique his work on the grounds that you've barely even seen any of it? That kinda puts you in beneath Mathers' league when you think about it but then again, thinking about anything these days is it's own punishment.

Let's not pretend that this was made for any reason other than trying to garner attention from spitting in the general direction of an award hog on the off chance that they come back into relevancy and your material generates attention by means of area effect from the obvious backlash from the vocal minority that would ensue, which to some extent, it already has. At this point, what else could an intelligent person be left to conclude?

If this was made to truly satirize Mathers then I'm sure you would've been wise enough to watch all of his content to critique something other than what every other parody has already said. I warn you that it'll be hard to rebuke the critique I give you now as you've already said this:

"I hope that's not an edgy reference to something said by illWillPress because I've never watched more than 10 seconds of anything created by them."

Methinks you watched a couple Neurotically Yours parodies and drew in only the most common elements among them to create this parody.

Regardless, it's ironic that you're critiquing Mathers for never writing anything new and in creating this parody, you've done exactly that; said nothing new. Thus the focal point of this review.

Before you do, don't resort to the obvious ad hominems that I know are bound to come my way by pretending that I'm only giving you negative critique as a means to defend Mathers, because to say that I'm on either side is to try to validate a false conundrum by insinuating that there are only two sides. Yes, I'm very well aware of the type of mindset this topic tends to attract.

By which I mean either you the author will reply to me yelling whatever tween stereotype comes to mind, despite the fact that I'm an adult, without actually rebuking any point I made or someone else attempting to ride your dick will leave a review telling me to shut up and accept your opinion. Somehow I doubt that despite "the urge to express yourself" that you'll defend the opinion that opposes you if the latter were to occur, despite whatever glaring difference in intelligence there might be. I thought I'd just let you know what I expect.

I suppose the point I'm attempting to convey here would be 'if seeing someone challenge your position hurts your feelings, you might consider never browsing Newgrounds'.

In all honesty, if it weren't for the fact that you only critiqued Neurotically Yours for being repetitious like everyone else ever and you actually knew more than ten seconds of what you were talking about before talking about it, there wouldn't be a problem, mainly because substantial critique would be prevalent.

If I had to draw a comparison, I'd say that your parody on Full Metal Alchemist was better simply because it didn't ape off of other parodies and had an original gag. For that you receive applause but this? This is just lame.

Also, yes, I watched everything in your back catalog before writing this. It is too bad that you don't run ads in any of them, you would've made a about a buck. If you rebuke that advice saying "Moneywhore" then you'll bring me to know just how 'totally underground' you are.

BoobMarley responds:

When I said that I've never watched more than 10 seconds of his stuff, I meant it. I didn't have to watch the entirety of the man's works to start feeling that they are all the same thing (monkey cheese random LOL + shock humor). I was able to gather that feeling from the twenty he posted to the portal in one week (for you mathmagicians out there, if he posted twenty cartoons and I watched a collective 10 seconds, that means I only gave each one half a second to wow me).

I've never seen a Neurotically Yours parody. The moment I felt compelled to animate this, I just sat down and did it. Didn't search out previous renditions, didn't even sniff around for factions to pander to. Didn't really care that much about other people (except of course inflaming his cult). Making this really came down to getting this annoying thought out of my head.

The fact that there might be several NY parodies out there, and this is but another match on the fire, has meaning only to someone who would know that prior to watching this. And that did not include me at the time of making.
I'm ultimately standing in the same place you say I am right now, only I didn't come by the same road that you have supposed. Does that make sense?

I really appreciate you taking the time to write a lengthy and well thought-out review. It speaks a lot to your character as well that you would go through my previous submissions to get a better idea of who it is you'd be speaking to. You seem like a decent guy.
That FMA parody was a work of pure love, and I hadn't given a thought to advertising with it. I was so exhausted by the end, I just wanted to post it. Of course after it started to garner so many views I thought it'd be awesome to make a little dough with an ad, but I wasn't sure how long it'd be featured on the front page and I really had no idea how much profit might be involved. I have a full-time job completely unrelated to animation or art of any kind, so the thought seldom crosses my mind, but I'd definitely do it if I thought it'd be worth my while.

Anyways, just to let you know how totally underground I am, let me leave off by saying fuck the police, you moneywhore.

Cheers.

This is moderately decent.

First off, you need a preloader for obvious reasons, you can get them here:

http://www.newgrounds.com/downloads/p reloaders/

Just in case you don't know, you put the preloader of your choice at the first frame.

The button at the end also doesn't work, you need to add actual ActionScript to it. The easiest way to program an external link in Flash is to go to click Window; Behaviors; Web; Go To Web Page and then insert your URL address and also be sure that the "Open In" option is set to "_blank".

I also noticed that you're using the Brush Tool, Brush Tool isn't your friend and the reason why is because it lacks the same kind of control as an actual outline; outlines created with Brush Tool are regarded by Flash as a color and not as an actual outline, meaning that if you want to use the blueprint method of animation by creating all the animation without filling it in with color until the project is effectively completed, then you're gonna be faced with the problem that you cant individually erase Brush Tool outlines by merely clicking on one of them with the Selection Tool and hitting delete like you can with an outline made with either Line Tool our Pencil Tool, specifically because since all the outlines created with Brush Tool are considered colors, that means that they'll automatically merge together when they're broken and made available to hold color, so if you delete one you delete them all.

This means you have to use the Eraser Tool to manually wipe away excess outlines that would otherwise hinder the quality of the finished product and the Eraser Tool is known to leave behind small remnants of the outlines you tried to erase which removes any attempt at producing clean and professional looking animation that you wanted to make.

Brush Tool is also known to leave gaps between lines, even ones that are supposed to be completely enclosed with each other, meaning that they're a bitch to fill in with color which usually ends up causing the author to resort to filling in the colors by using Brush Tool once again by chicken scratching the color in manually on a layer beneath the actual outlines which also creates the problem that the outline isn't truly filled in with color which ultimately means that it's not fully filled in with color and parts of it are still transparent, this also has the effect of having the color bleed out beyond the limits of the outlines.

In short, Brush Tool is essentially an inhibitor that's borderline unusable in any context. Since the outline tool is inherently straight as it should be, you can use the Selection Tool to bend the outline to give it a an arch, the Selection Tool will give you the signal that bending the outline is available when if shows you the lower right quadrant of a circle beneath your cursor. Although it may sound like a pain in the ass, it's sure as Hell a lot easier than trying to spot that break in the outlines 6 out of 10 times and having all your progress come to a screeching halt just to fix that one problem that you can barely see at 2000% zoom.

I've also noticed a little bit of excess to the far left, you either need to reduce the width in the aspect ratio from the Properties panel, reduce the width in the Submission form by about a pixel or just erase the obvious stage outlining entirely; it's most notable during the end sequence when Pikachu is crushed underneath the rock.

Speaking of which, at frame 235 the rock's outlining changes to the rock's filled in color, you can easily fix this by copying and pasting frame 234 onto frame 235 just to replicate the rock, I assume since you used a transformation tween to create the blood effect that you're also using multiple layers, it shouldn't hurt the other content in the timeline.

But since you're so young and your this inherently good at animation [albeit it is only a six frame loop extended out to one hundred and 3 frames] even with the shittiest tool at your disposal, after you learn all the rudimentary shit you'll probably be producing front page material.

NoahBHS responds:

Wow. First of all, thanks for that very long review. And, I have a few things I want to say. I know this is going in a loop, and I also know you can't click the face, I just wanted it to change when you touch it. It's not a replay button or anything. Also, I like using the brush tool, it's my style. I think the pencil tool makes it look bad, and I just don't like it. Famous Youtube\Newgrounds animators like LazyPillow (Yotam Perel), Oney (Chris O'Neill) and psychicpebble (Zach Hadel) all use the brush tool. No matter how bad people will think it looks, I will use it. But thanks for the review, and the tips. I will also have a preloader and a replay button in my next stuff.

I've always loved your work but I have only one critique toward this submission; the border is showing. Either surround the content on stage with a black box to block out the white background and content over-breaching the limits of the stage or re-appropriate the height and width settings in the upload page.

But beyond that, this is gold.

Speedo responds:

Tru dat, yo. When I draw backgrounds, I have a tendency to do them at exactly 800x450, but then end up putting them within the frame arse-ways so they're a tiny bit off and the border is visible. But thanks, I should do that black box thing anymore :D

It's good to see some old fashion Newgrounds comedy sweep up the general shittiness that the Flash portal has become subject too. I hope that this yields a callback to some of the old contributors and isn't just a one time deal.

I'm not going to critique the animation or the artwork because this is a series that was created with the intent of keeping artistic consistency all throughout thus leaving little room for improvement at all, so I'll just tackle technical issues instead.

Considering how the artwork and animation has to keep consistency all throughout the series & for that reason the Beebo series will easily become phased out as obsolete by comparison to new quality standards exampled by submissions such as the "There She Is!!!" series & anything produced by Zeurel along with occasional increments in capacity such as the website's file size limitations going from 10 megs to 20 that it'd be a smart idea to tackle the aspects other authors aren't with their content; the programming.

For example, I really wish there were a subtitle option because there are times where the characters can be perceived as unintelligible such as when Harry threw the garbage bag out the window & and proclaimed something like "This is not mine" or something to that effect. You could also make the subtitle system bilingual to broaden your audience.

Play, pause, rewind and forward controls would be nice too considering how the length of each Beebo episode can vary from episode to episode and members of the audience can be interrupted at any given time and having to start over from the beginning just to backtrack to the scene you left off at always sucks.

I noticed that your Ad hadn't been activated yet. Word of advice, it typically takes three days before the NG staff activate your CPMStar ad, so I suggest only submitting your SWF file between two to three days after you register the submission for ad approval, depending on how confident you are that your submission will take off the ground and end up on the front page or in the daily top five.

I really hope to see an upswing in Beebo submissions in the near future.

fabulous999 responds:

Thanks for the advice.

Because this is totally the mature way to respond to negative critique.

keolamation responds:

dude he told me to go kill myself a few days after my birthday on my wtf post about my profile piture not changing.. so no he wasn't giving me a critique he's just been a douche for the past year.. and NOT JUST TO ME

You're pathetic.

Yes Eddache, "It's too short" is, indeed, a legitimate complaint. By all means, this should have a lower score for just that exact reason. If the prospect of someone complaining about the lackluster qualities in your movie are enough to scare you off then you're a massive puss. Ericho's review was fair & kind & you regurgitated it as if he kicked you in the balls. I'd hate to see how you'd respond to truly negative critique, which is what I'm about to give to you now:

#1: The animation and artwork are shitty.

First & foremost, why do your characters only ever have three fingers when it's widely known that three fingers is not a stylistic choice of studio produced content but rather a budget cut? Your movies aren't dependent on a budget at all, you make them on your own & in your spare time, that means you don't have to answer to anyone nor do you have an actual deadline, which means that taking such a shortcut is nonsensical & fucking stupid.

Furthermore, why is it that whenever your characters clench their hands into fists they always cup their thumbs underneath their other four fingers? Hell, they even punch other people with their hands clenched like that even though in reality it would break their thumbs; the thumb is supposed to curve over the other four fingers, not under. Hell, that's something that people learn when they're in Kindergarten.

It appears as though you don't even know how to properly use Flash. If you do, then why is that freshly opened soda can bent to shit? Oh wait, I see, you didn't use the Oval tool to create the top of the can with with but rather the paint brush tool, the amateur's animation tool. And are you really so lame as to use a white to transparent radiant gradient to simulate light? I guess you had to, after all the shading on the characters face suggests that light is coming in from behind him rather from the monitor, despite the fact that the monitor is clearly the only light source in the room. I'm not even saying that the use of gradients is the problem, it's how they're being applied that blows; perhaps if you used a linear white to transparent gradient to convey the light beaming at him rather than this miniature star lookin' shit clamped between the monitor and the character's face, then it might be fine. But no, wait, then we'd still have to problem of the nonsensical shading to contend with.

Oh, and motion tweening? Really? It would have taken you only three frames of frame by frame animation to convey him extending his arm forward, but not only that, the way it's done suggests that his forearm is twisted at a 360 angle because it's origin point is jabbing half way into his arm. The monitor stand suggests that we're seeing the monitor from directly behind the screen, but to the right it's angled to look it's facing the character, so which is it? Don't tell me that this guy just has a fucked up monitor that's curved into a hump, that's obviously not what you're trying to convey here. Learn some perspective.

#2: The programming is lame and uninspired.

It's becoming more & more accepted by this point that, unless you're using copyrighted content in your video, if the author doesn't have either CPM Star ads or the NG API ads installed into their movie that the author is relatively ghetto in terms of understanding the absolute basics of action script, even despite the fact that the NG API comes with instructions on how to install it. If you don't care to make a legitimate attempt then why should I care to be nice? There are no controls for operating the movie, that is to say for pausing, rewinding, fast fowarding, returning to the menu ect. Hell, even I program keyboard commands in some of my shittier Flash submissions and I'm regarded as one of the shittiest authors on this site. At least you have a preloader set up, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were an uphill struggle for you to pull off with all things considered.

#3: Inb4

Before you try to retort my critique by critiquing my content, please note that ad hominems do not a solid argument make.

Eddache responds:

Ha, oh you. Writing a full blown essay of severe critique, ripping apart every square inch you can, for a 15 cartoon about a man ejaculating all over himself.
But, I'll assume you're also talking broadly about my work in general, not just specifically this. So I'll do my best to respond to your points.

Length-
There is absolutely no need for this cartoon to be a second longer than it needs to be. What is there to be added? The character sitting down and starting up the computer? Him standing up at the end to go for a shower? It was just intended to be a very quick and silly response to the nude pics with no need for further elaboration. There is no predefined limit to the length of cartoons so there is no point needlessly stretching out for time. My original point was that the frequent complaints of "It's too short" drives these short silly cartoons to other places like YouTube where no-one cares if it's short. In fact, it often works better. So Newgrounds could be losing out on great super-short toons because commenters are unhappy that it wasn't longer. Things can be too long and drag or too short and miss the point, but more often than not, toons are as long as they need to be.

Hands-
It's not a budget cut. I can afford to draw 4 fingers & a thumb. It's a method that makes hands easier to draw. Hands are tricky, I guess because they're so recognisable that flaws are obvious. So cartoons give them sausage fingers so that gestures are clearer and easier. But with big fingers, it often means losing the extra digit. It's a stylistic choice many adopt, myself growing up on Looney Tunes saw it all the time, along with giant eyes and noses.

Deadline-
Technically I do have a deadline. It's when my free time runs out. I have a life that I don't need fill up drawing perfectly proportioned anatomically correct bodies. I'll go out on a limb and even say that no-one gets that anal about it unless they were being professional. I think everyone can tell I'm not a professional.

Brush Tool-
The amateurs animation tool? Hah! You better tell all the top artists of Newgrounds because I think most of them use brush tools! As for the oval tool, or the line tool in general, that's a much lengthier process which I only really employ for cartoons such as Edd Egg.

Light & Shading-
Yes, I used a shortcut for lighting. And the shading was actually meant to be a glow, but in retrospect that wasn't clear. I guess that means I won't be winning that Tank Award.

Motion Tweening-
Hah! There it is. I was waiting for that. I'll be the first one to tell you I am not an animator. Nope. I just make stuff I hope people like. Some miss the mark and some get a lot of positive feedback. Ultimately, I hold content in greater priority to presentation. You knew it was meant to be his arm moving so job done. It could have been animated better but I'm not trying to be Disney here.

Programming-
This whole bit is laughable. I don't see how programming knowledge is even relevant artistically. I don't care about ads & I never use controls (I'd just watch it on YouTube if I was that bothered). In fact, this was meant to just be on YouTube so I just lazily threw in the NG preloader thinking I doubt anyone will care.

Overall, many of your points are correct. I'm not great artist nor a great animator. I'm not a programmer at all and really only use flash as a means to make silly things that some seem to enjoy. My interests in animating have wained anyway and I've made more and more shortcuts in production, but still with the aim of getting the content across.

Your critique, while correct for the most part, seems to wish for more effort poured into something that really doesn't merit it. And also over-the-top about extremely minor points that no-one really cares about.

I would argue that you ought to learn some perspective too.
